So I guess I will buy another 716SA and have an all SATA system since those seem to work OK, and just put the replacement 716A in the closet for a spare.

with the return shippping on my nickle of course as usual. But if it won't even open the disk tray it is useless, and you can't even do the self test they want you to do, but they do seem to be willing to RMA it. after I took it out and looked at it and reinstalled it, it worked and during that one day it was able to successfully copy some CD's with no problems. it just sits there and flashes amber 5 times, and then pauses and flashes 5 amber more times. Now I took a chance and bought another 716SA and another 716A for a new computer I am building, since the PX Premium is no longer being sold (which would have been my choice for the second drive along with the PX-716SA if the Premium were still available). DOA and they made me jump through a lot of hoops but finally replaced it and the replacement works OK.
PLEXTOR PX 716A SOFTWARE
I bought one in March and it would never read any kind of disks and would just lock up the computer. So, the Plextor PX-716A is a fast DVD writer, with a good but overly embellished software bundle and a strong heritage but how much are you expected to pay for performance and quality Well. You can also rewrite DVD+RW discs at 8X, DVD-RW discs at 4X and CD-RW discs at 24X speeds. The drive features write speeds of up to 16X for DVD discs and 48X for CDs. The PX-716A units are another story however. Create, edit and share customized DVDs and CDs with friends and family using the PX-716A Internal Double Layer Combo Drive from Plextor. Please do yourself a favor and do not buy this drive no matter how much the price comes down.Ĭomments: I have three PX Premiums, two PX-708A's and two PX-716SA's and they are all great. Plextor has been such a big leader in optical drives in the past, however I will be going back to my solid Sony optical drives from now on. However one thing they are unable to do well is test durability over time (for obvious reasons). They put products through extensive testing. Overall Review: I mostly go by what PCworld says, as they are almost always correct. I am now on my 2nd drive, and yes just 4 months into owning it, it now wont read any DVD's or CD's that were burned, it only reads printed media. It was still under waranty and I recived a replacement. It now would ONLY burn a DVD, couldnt read one or do anything with a CD. However 1 month after that (3mo into purchase) it stopped reading all DVD media. I was going to keep it anyways since I bought it for the DVD features. It stopped burning and reading ALL CD media. After about 2 months of very light CD burning (I usually use my Sony 52X) the entire CD portion of it just died. If you get lucky, with one of the working models that is.Ĭons: Everything about the drive worked flawlessly when I first installed it. For months it was the ONLY DVD burner which could handle 16X burning (altho I'm sure by now there are others). It's the fastest and most flexible DVD burner I have ever owned. Problems can arise when your hardware device is too old or not supported any longer.Pros: The reason I bought this drive (and probably why you are thinking of buying it yourself) is because it burns everything rediculously fast, and just about every type of media you could imagine. This will help if you installed an incorrect or mismatched driver.

Try to set a system restore point before installing a device driver.

PLEXTOR PX 716A INSTALL
So, if you intend to install this release, hit the download button to get the desired package and update the firmware. So after about 7 years of service, I replaced it with an LG DVD writer / bluray player. When it comes to the installation method, since most manufacturers provide their own way for upgrading ODDs, it’s best that you carefully read and understand the update steps, regardless if you’re a power user or a regular one.Īs for applying this software, before initiating the installation, it is recommended that you remove any disc from the optical drive, close all applications and processes that might interfere with the upgrade, and make sure that the system is connected to a stable power source (an update failure can seriously damage the ODD firmware). However, a firmware update doesn’t always include significant enhancements, and in some cases might not improve yours at all. About ODD Firmware:Ĭhanging your optical disk drive (ODD) firmware version can bring numerous changes such as compatibility improvements for different disc types, or various fixes for certain problems encountered during the unit’s lifetime. The drive achives blazing fast 16X CAV performance on recommended 8X DVD R media, and burns a 4.7GB DVD in less than six minutes, the drive also supports dual-layer DVD media, enabling users to burn up to four hours of high-quality.
